In the Houston, TX, metro area, clothing, cash and credit are a potent trio.
Among the four major metro areas in Texas, residents of the Houston area spend the most money per household on laundry and dry-cleaning services. That’s according to data obtained by Press Cleaners from Geographic Research, a supplier of location-based data.
In 2016, residents of the Houston area spent $151.2 million on laundry and dry-cleaning services (excluding self-service laundromats), the data shows. On a per-household basis, that’s $65.61.
It’s worth noting that the $151.2 million in expenditures last year encompasses every household, whether that household spent nothing on laundry and dry-cleaning services or spent $800.
On our list, the Houston area is followed by:
- Dallas-Fort Worth, TX ($64.94 per household)
- Austin, TX ($64.54 per household)
- San Antonio, TX ($56.53 per household)
So, why are the Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth metros the leaders for spending on laundry and dry-cleaning services? A key reason is that the workplace dress codes in those two regions are more corporate, while the workplace dress codes in the Austin and San Antonio areas are more relaxed.
“Walk into a Houston business wearing a suit and you’ll instill confidence and respect. Walk into an Austin business wearing a suit and you’ll likely be asked — very skeptically — what you’re selling,” Mark Turpin, CEO of The HT Group, says in a post on the blog of the Austin-based staffing company.
