As a startup that operates a pickup and delivery service for laundry and dry cleaning, we’re a little distressed here at Press Cleaners when we hear that someone’s washing their own clothes. Ugh! We can think of so many more gratifying things to do with our time, like heading out to dinner, catching up on our favorite TV shows or playing with our kids.
According to estimates based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average woman in the U.S. could save roughly two hours a week by outsourcing laundry, and the average man could save about half an hour. Just imagine how many shows you could binge-watch on Netflix over the course of a year if you weren’t chained to your washer and dryer.
To find out where Americans are the most weighed down by laundry drudgery, we dove into American Housing Survey data indicating the number of households in 40 major metro areas and the overall number of household washing machines. For each area, we then calculated the percentage of washing machines among all households. The U.S. Census Bureau surveyed each area in 2013, 2015 or both.
Using those percentages, we ranked the Top 10 Places Where People Are Chained to Their Washing Machines. Our heads are spinning just envisioning all the people in these areas who are sweating over their laundry chores right now.
